Saturn in Scorpio: Nov 2014 -Jan 2017

The Big Event in November is that, after nearly three years transiting through Libra, Saturn is finally gonna move. Saturn changes signs, entering Scorpio, on November 2nd. Saturn is the outermost of the visible planets. Being so far away from the Sun, Saturn pokes along in the zodiac, taking from 2 to 3 years to get through a sign. So this is a Big Deal, and has some major implications, for world events, as well as for our personal lives. Saturn will be in Scorpio until January 25, 2017.

Every planet, and every sign, has its own intrinsic qualities. A planet has to express its energy through the agency of the sign it is placed in. So what happens when Saturn’s qualities have to combine with Scorpio?

Saturn is the planet of Responsibility, of Burdens. I call Saturn the Reality-Check planet. It’s the planet of Structure, of Form, and therefore Limitation & Restriction. Saturn is Discipline; Saturn is Work. It is also the planet of Time, Old Age, and Maturity. Saturn slows things down; Saturn causes Delay. At its most negative, Saturn is the planet of Suffering, Chronic Illness, and Death. Saturn is considered a Tamasic planet, a planet that represents the lower realms. Therefore in Vedic Astrology, Saturn is designated as a “natural malefic,” a planet that can cause harm.

Saturn is the planet of Endurance and Longevity. Anything that gets started while under the influence of Saturn, will last a long time. This could be for good, or for ill. For instance, if you make a friend while Saturn transits through your 11th house of friendship, that friend will stick with you for a long time, whether you want him to or not. If you get sick while Saturn transits through your 6th house of disease, the disease will be hard to get rid of.

Now for Scorpio. This sign also has something of a bad reputation, due to some of its less desirable characteristics. Scorpio is a sign of Deep Feeling, a Passionate sign. Another trait of Scorpio is Metamorphosis; it is the sign of Transformation. Scorpio is one of the “fixed” signs; Scorpio stays fixed on its goal and pushes forward towards achievement, i.e., a sign of strong determination. This sign has a talent for secrets, both harboring secrets, and finding out other people’s secrets. Scorpio is the Psychologist of the zodiac. Scorpio also has an attraction to Power; Scorpio likes to acquire power. Another quality of Scorpio is for forming alliances, especially alliances that bring more power. The problem is, whether Scorpio will use its talents and power for good, or for ill.

So what happens when we combine Saturn with Scorpio? Here are a few of the possibilities:

The planet of Control in the sign of Psychology results in a very charismatic, manipulative, ends-justifies-the-means approach; the kind of energy that gets things done, but by whatever means necessary. This is an energy pattern familiar to dictators, totalitarian regimes, and control freaks of all types.

The planet of Structure in the sign of Transformation suggests major changes coming to some of our familiar reality structures. Scorpio shares some of the qualities of its ruler, Mars, the planet of Action, Aggression, and Results. Saturn, the planet of the Established Order, is not comfortable in a Mars sign that wants to create Change. On the other hand, if change is what you need or desire, this may sound like good news.

Both Saturn and Scorpio are known for making Prolonged, Determined Efforts. Scorpio’s relentless quality, teamed up with Saturn’s endurance, creates a formidable energy package for Getting the Job Done. So if you have a project that requires that sort of persistent, sustained forcefulness, the next two years may be just what you need. Just remember that this energy will be available to everyone, for whatever purposes.

For some real-live examples of what happens when Saturn is transiting in Scorpio, we can dial back 28 –30 years ago, to 1985, 1986, & 1987, the last time that Saturn was transiting through Scorpio.

Back then, hijacking airliners was all the rage with international terrorists trying to call attention to their cause; there were several of those incidents. Scorpio represents the Underworld: criminals, assassins, and terrorists; Saturn is uncompromising.

Scorpio is the sign of Metamorphosis and Power, which translates to nuclear power, i.e., changing the atom. But Saturn is the Reality Check planet. In 1986, the Soviet Union’s Chernobyl power plant had an accident, and the world got a severe lesson on the downside of nuclear power.

Scorpio is the sign of Secret Activities; Saturn is the planet of Practical Goals. This ends-justifies-the-means approach is what led to the Iran-Contra affair back in 1985 -87. The Scorpio penchant for Secret Operations, combined with Saturn’s tamasic qualities, can lead to Scandal.

But remember Scorpio is also the sign of Alliances, as well as Transformation; Saturn is Structure, and The Established Order. The last time Saturn was in Scorpio was when President Ronald Reagan, and President Mikhail Gorbachev, came together…. and fell in love… which transformed the World Order, big time, and for the good!

In your own personal astrology chart, the position of Saturn, by house, will give some clues to what you can expect over the next two years. Wherever Saturn transits in a natal chart there will be Responsibilities that have to be dealt with, which could become Burdensome. In the house (sector of life) of your chart where Saturn transits, there will be Limitations or Restrictions of some sort. Saturn’s transit also slows things down with respect to any factors it affects in your natal chart. On the positive side, Saturn gives Lasting Results. The interpretations that follow will have to be adjusted if Saturn will be connecting with any natal planets or sensitive points in your chart.

Aries Rising

For Aries Rising, Saturn will be in your 8th house. The planet of longevity transiting through your 8th house of chronic problems is not a good thing if you get sick or have some legal issues; it will take a long time to resolve such things. The planet of Limitations in the house of the Partners Wealth, and Financial Arrangements with Others, means any support from that quarter will be less, rather than more, over the next two years.

Taurus Rising

If you are Taurus Rising, Saturn will be transiting in your 7th house of Relationship, Partnership, Marriage, Clients, and Deals in Distant Places. Saturn is serious energy, the energy of maturity, of responsibility. When influencing this part of the chart, Saturn signifies taking your relationships more seriously, i.e., fulfilling your marital obligation to your spouse. Or, if there is already trouble in your partnership, Saturn’s separative quality could in fact, put an end to things. On the other hand, any new relationship that gets started while Saturn transits through your 7th house will endure, whether you want it to, or not.

Gemini Rising

Gemini Rising people will have Saturn transiting in their 6th house, the house of Struggle and Difficulties, Work and Service, Health & Disease, Debts and Enemies. Again, remembering Saturn’s quality of longevity, you will have to be careful over the next two years of getting sick, or going into debt, or making any new enemies. Any of these are going to take a long time to get rid of. Saturn is the planet of Work and Responsibility, and the 6th house is Your Job: this transit could entail you taking on more work, more responsibilities, in your employment.

Cancer Rising

For Cancer Rising Saturn will be transiting in your 5th house for the next two years. As the planet of limitations in the sign of love, Saturn can put the clamp on starting a new romance. But, if a romance does get going, it will be serious, and likely to last a long time. And, Saturn being the planet of Maturity, the romance will be with a Real Adult. The 5th house being the house of Children, if you have children, your responsibilities to them, as well as the quality of their own lives, will take on a new level of seriousness.

Leo Rising

If you are Leo Rising, Saturn will be transiting in your 4th house, affecting your home, your domestic life, your sense of inner peace and comfort, and your relationship with your mother and her life. Saturn transiting in this part of your chart makes home life more burdensome. Saturn represents old things, so if you move to a different residence, it will be to an older home. Or, the home you are living in will need repairs. There will be more responsibilities in dealing with your mother, and her life may go through difficulties.

Virgo Rising

Virgo Rising people will have Saturn in their 3rd house for the next two years. This position of Saturn can be helpful, especially for workaholic Virgos. The 3rd house is the house of making efforts, and Saturn is the planet of Persistence. But Saturn slows things down, so don’t expect fast results. The planet of responsibility in the 3rd house of Everyday Activities means you will be taking on more obligations in your daily life, which may be experienced as more burdensome.

Libra Rising

If Libra is your rising sign, then Saturn will be affecting your 2nd house of Personal Finances, Material Circumstances, Family Life, and Speech. Generally, the planet of Restriction is not welcome in this house, since it could reduce your income. Often it just manifests as the planet of Work in the house of money, i.e., “workin’ hard for the money.” The planet of Responsibility in your house of Family will increase your obligations in that area.

Scorpio Rising

For Scorpio rising charts, Saturn will be in your Ascendant for two years. Scorpios will experience Saturn as directly affecting their personality. Life seems more Serious, Restricted, and Frustrating. This is a time of Lessons. The lesson is to slow down, plan your moves better, and take the long view. Since the Ascendant is also representative of the Body, you will likely experience less energy, physical fatigue, or even disease.

Sagittarius Rising

Sagittarius rising people will have Saturn transiting through their 12th house. The planet of Harsh Reality in the house of Endings, brings some episode of your life to a close over the next two years. Saturn is a natural acetic, and while in the 12th house of the Subconscious, and Separation, this planet’s transit inclines you to spend more time alone, in Contemplation and Introspection.

Capricorn Rising

If you are Capricorn rising, then Saturn transits through your 11th house of Friends and Associates, Goals and Ambitions, Profits and Gains. Saturn may limit your profits during this time, or you have to work harder for what you do get. You are likely to be spending less time with your friends, or the relationship may deteriorate, or someone may even exit from your life. But in some ways Saturn is welcome here, especially in the sign Scorpio, since it’s energy will make you more determined to achieve your goals.

Aquarius Rising

For Aquarius charts, Saturn will transit through your 10th house of Career, Professional Activities, Status, and Community Acts. The planet of Work, Responsibilities, and Discipline in your house of Career will make you put more time into this part of your life. The payoff will come, but slowly, eventually. If Saturn in this part of your chart makes negative connections to any natal planets, you could get the downside of this transit: a Fall from your Position.

Pisces Rising

And lastly, Pisces rising will have Saturn transiting in their 9th house, the house of Good Luck, Beliefs, Father, Higher Learning & Long-distance Travel. When transiting in the 9th house, Saturn tends to limit one’s good fortune. The Relationship with Father or Guru could get a bit frosty. Your studies become more difficult and burdensome. And any long-distance Journeys you do make, will be due to responsibilities.

For people born with Saturn in Scorpio, Saturn is returning to your natal position. Saturn returns to its natal position every 28 -29 years. This transit reinforces the energy of natal Saturn, making Saturn’s significations stronger in your life Nov 2014 -Jan 2017. Therefore: more Responsibilities, more Burdens, and the Need to Be Realistic.

Saturn transiting in the 9th house for Pisces Ascendants will generally give some problem with Father. It does not necessarily mean that father passes. The death of a relative cannot always be attributed to a malefic transit in your own chart. A malefic transit will, generally, indicate some problem either in the life of that person, or in the relationship with that person.

    Hi,
I am scorpio rising and my friend is scorpio sun. We were the best of friend, but on November 2nd we had an argument over something and since then he hasn’t been talking to me. I know Saturn transit happened on the same day. Does this mean this will have a long lasting effect? Will he never talk to me or we will never be friends again?
    Thanks!

Yes, that was the day (November 2, 2014) that Saturn entered Scorpio. Unfortunately, Saturn is the planet of Longevity, so events that happen under Saturn’s influence tend to last a long time, whether for good or bad.

Same here. I’m Scorpio rising & moon ex husband is same degree Scorpio sun as my rising. On Nov 2, we both got into a huge fight and file for divorce that day. Things haven’t been the same. I believe Saturn will exempt anything of your life that unhealthy even if we don’t see it clearly right now. I’m today thankful for getting out a toxic relationship. Best of luck to you

It is not a good idea to analyze a chart based on a few planetary positions. Every factor in the chart needs to be considered. The current planetary periods and transits also have to be taken into account. The process takes a good deal of time. Therefore I do not publish analysis on the comments page.

Does the 9th house also represent guru / astrologer, meaning that if the house is afflicted one should not seek an advice of astrologer / guru ?

    Reply
    1. ronberger Post author

The 9th house does represent guru, and father. If the 9th house is afflicted by a malefic, and it’s lord (ruler of the sign in the 9th house) is weak in the chart, and if Jupiter (karaka of Guru) is also weak or afflicted, then one should be careful with gurus, or potentially being mislead by teachings, and will have problems in any case acquiring higher knowledge.

    Hello Mr. Ron,

I’m a new to learning vedic astrology and just started to connect the dots to learn predictive astrology. I have Leo asc, and in 2013, when saturn was transiting libra (3rd house), I lost my father suddenly following the birth of a my child in two months. Can you please elaborate on how a malefic planet can take away one life and as well bring in a new life. This question has been intriguing me for a long time. Also can you please
suggest few good books for learning predictive astrology. Thanks a bunch!!

Child is the 5th house; Father is the 9th house. The 8th counted from the 9th in YOUR chart is the death of your father. 8th house counted from the 9th is the 5th house, i.e., same house as house of Child. Therefore, an activation of your 5th house can affect both your child and your father’s life. But, everything depends on the details, where planets are in the natal chart, the dasha sequence, the transits, etc. Also: birth of a child is not just your chart, but your wife’s chart equally. And of course, death of father is more dependent on his chart, rather than your chart.

      Reply
        1. ronberger Post author

Correct. My mistake. The father’s death is the 4th house, being 8th from 9th. The 5th house, as 9th from 9th, is the father’s destiny. Not the same as death, but still could indicate simultaneous events in child’s life as the 5th house, and father’s life, as 9th from 9th.

Saturn transiting through the 10th house is the planet of Responsibility transiting in the house of Career. This could mean getting a more demanding job, or more responsibilities in the job you already have. If Saturn is a malefic in the natal chart, it could mean loss of your job, downturn in Career, etc. As usual, everything depends on the details of the chart, the dasha sequence, transits in other parts of the chart, etc.

I hesitate to give impromptu advice based on only a couple of factors. My experience in making predictions is that ALL factors in the natal chart, the dasha sequence, the transits… everything has to be looked at, and carefully weighed, in order to achieve accuracy. This takes a lot of time to do. Therefore, best to order a reading (see “order a reading” page on this website) if you want some dependable advice.

At this point , I don’t know whether acknowledge my natal western Saturn in Saigtarious or Vedic Saturn in Scorpio (both 6th house) chart. I was born Nov 17th , 1986 at 7:38pm in Merced, CA USA. Interestingly enough , I have been having health issues the last year and a half and haven’t been able to get any answers or help from doctors. They can’t find anything wrong with me. I’ve also been promoted in my management career taking on a lot more responsibility which i enjoy. What else can i expect as Saturn transits through my vedic Scorpio ( or Western Sagitarious)? There can be no dependable prediction without an evaluation of the entire chart. Considering only one or two factors, such as Saturn’s transit to your 7th house, will only give you a general prediction, the same that you would find in any astrology book. Such a general analysis will be wrong in many cases, due to the many other factors affecting the outcome, as indicated by planetary positions in your natal chart, and in the Zodiac.

For Pisces you now have the additional problem of Saturn transiting through your 9th house, the house of Higher Learning. Saturn the planet of Delay, the planet of Difficulties, makes your studies a drag right now. Saturn will leave Scorpio in January 2017. Until then, you have to cooperate with Saturn: be Disciplined, Organized, and Patient!

Jupiter is the great benefic. The kendra houses (1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th) are the most dynamic sectors of the chart. When Jupiter the planet of Opportunity transits through a kendra house, one’s fortunes (generally) will rise. But, not always as high as your expectations.
For an accurate analysis, the entire chart has to be considered, along with all of the mathematical formulas for detailing the positive and negative effects. This is not a 5 minute exercise. See the page on How to Order a Reading if you are serious about finding the answers to your questions.

    Hi,

For Taurus Asc and Libra Asc, SAT rules good houses and called yogakaraka. Now, when you consider TRANSIT from Asc, can TRANSIT SAT be malefic? OR does its also behave like a benefic or yogakarak?

Similarly, JUP rules 6th house for Cancer Asc and 8th house for Tau Asc. Hence it should behave like a malefic. For these Ascendants, can TRANSIT JUP be a benefic and bring opportunities?

The transit of a planet is not the same as the natal planet. Natal Saturn for Venus-ruled ascendants (Taurus, Libra) is yogakaraka, and if prominently placed in chart, will give success. But Saturn also planet of Delay and Old Age. So, success comes late. Transit of Saturn is different. Transit of Saturn indicates “Reality Check,” Delay, Limitation, Burden, etc., affecting the transited house, no matter what the Ascendant. Transit of Saturn gives better results in its own sign or friendly sign. Similarly, Jupiter, even if a temporal malefic for the natal chart, will still bring Opportunity and Increase to the house it transits through. As always, other simultaneous factors such as aspects to natal planets, and aspects from simultaneous transits, have to be evaluated in order to predict results.

    Hi,

For a malefic planet, is it better to be weak than strong? Can weak SAT give more troubles than strong SAT?

Similarly, will a weak 6th lord bring lesser troubles from enemies, diseases than a strong 6th lord?

For Natural Malefic planets, such as Saturn, the rulership of the houses, and position in the chart, as well as influence of other planets, must be evaluated to understand the strength and effects. If Saturn rules an unfavorable house, a strong Saturn placed in a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) will give a very difficult life. If weak, then Saturn will give less trouble. For example: Saturn as ruler of the 6th house of enemies, if combust, indicates annihilation of enemies. However, it can still give health problems for the heart.

Suppose JUP as a 12th lord placed in 2nd OR 11th. In this case, JUP being a natural benefic, should promote finances. Whereas as 12th lord it can also deplete finances? How do you find the ultimate financial status due to this JUP?

As per Vedic astrology, the combination of 5th and 10th should give good results. Suppose 5th Lord placed in 10th. It should be good for career (10). But at the same time, 5th is 8th from 10th. Hence, it should give trouble to 10th. How do you resolve this?

Similarly, 9th Lord in 10th may be good but 9th is 12th to 10th. How will be the result for 10th?

    Best regards

    Please get your facts straight.

    1. ronberger Post author

My facts are totally straight. Your problem is that you are referring to the Tropical Zodiac. Vedic Astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac, the one you can see with your naked eyes. Western Astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac, which is based on where the Sun happens to be on the Vernal Equinox. This point of the Sun registered against the backdrop of the Heavens changes slightly each year, due to the wobble of the Earth on its axis. The Tropical Zodiac is now about 24 degrees different (advanced) from the actual positions of the stars. This change in the Western Astrologer’s zodiac is what makes Western Astrology less accurate, due to the accumulated data not being consistent over the centuries, as far as planets in the signs go. Generally, if the Moon and its lord are strong, Sade Satie will not bring so much suffering.
